New Moons in General

Each lunation-- whether it's a new moon, a full moon, or an eclipse-- sets the tone for the next two weeks until the following one. But they also mark important pivot points in our lives, and connect with previous and future lunations six months apart. In other words, a new moon in Aries will be followed six months later by a full moon in Aries, which will be followed by new moon in Aries six months after that and so on.

New moons coincide with new beginnings and thus indicate good times for intention setting and initiating new endeavors. The moon is so close to the sun during a new moon that we can't see it, and nights are darker as a result. This is like the darkness of a seed freshly planted in soil. As the moon gains light over the next two weeks, that metaphorical seed begins to sprout. When the full moon occurs in the same sign six months later, it will be time for the harvest.

New moons occur every 28 days. Over the course of one year, there will be one new moon in each of the twelve signs, which correspond to each of the twelve houses in your birth chart. The houses represent different areas of life, such as career, relationships, family, etc.

Therefore you can use these events as occasions to annually review each one. Consider the topics represented in each new moon's chart and set related goals for the corresponding life area. That way, you'll intentionally work on every part of your life throughout the year, focusing on one per month.

The Topics by Rising Sign section at the end of this article will help you determine which life area this new moon will activate in your natal chart. If you'd like a more personalized approach, a reading will provide more insight than any horoscope app or blog ever could.

Set your intentions on the day of the new moon. The two weeks following the new moon are typically excellent times to take initial steps related to those intentions. For the next six months, set goals, make plans and take actions in alignment with those intentions.

Six months later, when the full moon occurs in the same sign, check in with how your approach to your goal has served you, and readjust as needed.

This New Moon's Chart Features

  • Moon conjunct Sun in Sagittarius' decan*, closely applying to conjunct Antares: The cycle beginning at this time is fiercely goal-oriented, competitive, and not afraid to fight.

  • Moon and Sun copresent with Mercury, retrograde in Sagittarius' third decan: This feisty, goal-oriented cycle is, however, beginning at a time when the data informing our goals is in need of serious fact-checking before we start crusading over it. Whatever begins now is likely to need revision over the next several months, so flexibility will be key. We may be inclined to ruminate on worst-case scenarios.

  • Sagittarius' ruler Jupiter in Gemini's second decan: The motivation fueling our current goals stems from an inclination to give ourselves generously to a variety of contradictory causes, which depletes our effectiveness in any of them. This inclination creates tension with our goals and communications.

  • Moon, Sun, Mercury and Jupiter in a t-square with Saturn in Pisces' second decan: The goals we set now, the information we have, and our inclination to graciously expand in all directions are all in conflict with boundaries separating heaven from earth, church from state, and dreams from reality. Those boundaries are, however, fairly flexible at this time, and many loopholes in the written laws will allow for the mixing of one side with the other. Ultimately, the proclivity to expand unsustainably in all directions is the inspiration behind it all.

  • Meanwhile: Though not directly configured to this new moon, the following aspects in this chart are worth noting.

    • Mars, about to station retrograde, in antiscia with Uranus in Taurus, applying to opposition with Pluto in Aquarius: Our ability to move and act is slower than usual, and much more volatile and explosive. There is a strong desire to project a certain image and control what the public does and does not see.

    • Venus in Capricorn's third decan closely applying to trine Uranus in Taurus' third decan: Connection and harmonization acquire an appreciation for mastery and accomplishment that flows well with the ongoing destabilization of vital resources.

* I use Austin Coppock's book 36 Faces, an excellent guide to the decans, as a reference for writing these articles, and while I have done my best to convey those ideas in my own way, many of the keywords from that book appear above.

Considerations

  • What kind of goals can you set when you don't have all of the information you need?

  • What kind of goals are flexible enough to succeed over a time period when things will be changing significantly?

  • What is worth fighting for? What's the smartest way to fight for it?

  • Which of the causes you care about would benefit most from your of time and resources?

  • Who can you connect with to share vital resources and skills?

Recommendations

  1. Set intentions: Consider the topics and themes described in the Chart Features and Summary sections above. If you know your rising sign, check the list below for the topics this lunation will activate for you specifically. Spend some time brainstorming on these combined topics. What are the most positive, desirable versions of these themes you can imagine for yourself? If you find yourself imagining negative scenarios that seem dauntingly plausible, think about what practical steps you could take to turn that situation in a positive direction. I like to write a list of my goals during new moons, but you could get creative with it and make art, music, poetry, a vision board or find some other way represent your intentions.

  2. Make plans: Once your intentions are set, consider actions to take over the next six months to make your vision a reality. Figure out what you'll do and when you'll do it.

  3. Plant metaphorical seeds: Over the next two weeks (between the now and the next full moon) take the first steps toward the goals you've set, even if they are only symbolic steps.

  4. Work that plan: Follow through on your plan for the next six months, until the Sagittarius full moon, which will represent the culmination of your effort.
